One of the names God has chosen for himself is Father. Why would he do that, when so many fathers abuse and cause problems for their children and their wives. And I understand. As a father myself I make mistakes. I say the wrong thing or don’t do the right things. I wish I could be perfect but I’m not and I am sorry and tell my kids so. But that is the point, comparing me to God, my name is father and God’s name is Father is not the same. Where I fail, God is perfect. He does not fail and has never failed me, Anna or Abi and Mia. He has always been the perfect Father, where I am not. He provides security, strength, love, compassion and care.
The other point is that we call him Father because he wants us to know he has an interest in us. He wants to be involved in our lives, intimately and actively and as the perfect Father, he will respond in the best way.
Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are?
Matthew 6 v 26
Christianity is not about rules, it is about relationship. It is about a relationship with Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Father, the Trinity, the God, three in one, who are in relationship and ask us to be in relationship with them.
Christianity is not about us and what we do, it is about a God who calls himself Father, calling us to be with him. Our ultimate destiny as Christians is not heaven, it is to be with the Father.
