We went to the Eden Project (@edenproject) the other day with the intention of having a photo competition. Anna was ill in bed and so Mia, Abi and I set out to photograph Eden. Anna would judge. We had 6 categories:
- Pictures of the Dome
- General photos
- Objects throughout the outside dome
- Pictures of the land train
- And pictures of us
Here are the winners from all categories. I will post all images entered from each category in different posts. Please feel free to comment and vote. The featured image in each post is the winner, apart from here, where I have selected a random image. Enjoy!
Anna voted the following winners:
- Dome – Abi
- Flowers – Mia
- General – Rich
- Object – Rich
- Train – Abi
- Us – Mia
They are very useful and can enhance our lifestyles, at the moment however, I constantly see negative influences in our lives.
When I leave Fowey River Academy at the end of the day, I pass parents who have just picked up their children from Fowey Primary School and I am shocked at how many parents are walking down the road reading texts, Facebook or Instagram or generally on the phone. There has been numerous changes to the UK law around mobile phones and driver distraction.
ROSPA issues a driver distraction factsheet in which they make this statement:
Worryingly, distracted drivers underestimate the effects that distraction has on them, and do not perceive their reduced awareness or their ability to spot hazards. This may be because they are still looking at the road straight ahead and are not gathering the whole picture of the road around the vehicle.ROSPA driver distraction factsheet
When I see parents ignoring their children in favour of their phone it causes me some bother! What is happening to those children as you are using your phone walking alongside a busy road? Do you know or like a car driver are you distracted? What is worse using a mobile phone has a deeper effect causing tension, conflicts and negative interactions. Toggling between using a mobile phone and your children causes emotional tension and will disrupt family routines.
The answer is not to ditch your mobile phone but to ask yourself some serious questions on how you use your phone. Is it time to have a distraction free period of interaction with you and your children. Set a time for when they return from school and spend quality time with them. During this period remove your phone from the area or even better simply turn it off.
Children and young people react negatively to the use of smartphones and using them can create negative emotions within children that you might not even be aware is happening. Using your phone during ‘play’ time reduces your focus on your children with fewer verbal and non-verbal interactions. Mobile phones have a way of demanding your attention that other distractions don’t even cooking!
My plea is for us to start dictating to the how we will use it not the phone dictating use to us.
England V USA. What a match! I don’t like VAR and I don’t like penalties. Why Oh why do England lose matches on a penalty? That said, England had lost the game before that. Now some of you might be asking why am I talking about football. Last night I realised I do not like men’s football. Women’s football, that is much more of a game. But my thought this morning is not based on women’s football, it is this:
One of my favourite film directors Josh Whedon said,
“So, why do you write these strong female characters?Josh Whedon
Because you’re still asking me that question.”
It is time that we recognised that the fairer sex has nothing to with gender and more to do with hair colour and the last time I looked men had blonde hair as well. Equality doesn’t mean we are the same, equality means we treat all with respect and with equal measure. I love holding the door open to people… to all not just women but men, children and aliens when they pop down to visit us.
I don’t want to say women’s football is better than men’s (although it clearly is), saying that I am a cricket fan and both the women’s and men’s game is amazing. What I want to say is that in all walks of life it is time for change but none more so than in sport. I have had to write women’s that and women’s this – next time I write it will be England cricket team played amazingly well last night and you can guess who I am writing about.
Enjoy the day.
Get off the roller coaster and start living
“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.” Albert Einsteen
As you go older time seems to go quicker. This happens because the value of a day lessons as life lengthens. By value I mean 1 day as part of 3 years is a larger fraction than 1 day of 54 years. Time shortens.
So seize every moment. Put down that phone and talk. Don’t stay in work longer than you have to. Live life for the now. Yes plan for the future but don’t let it dominate. Live for today.
