Youth work can complement the work that schools do. Schools are about educating young people. Youth work is about educating young people but with an informal approach.
Schools are identifying an increase in the challenges facing young people including reports of poor mental health, well-being and anxiety, poverty and hunger. As a youth worker I have seen this in the areas I work in. Schools are aware of the impact this causes in the classroom. But with greater pressures on schools they are finding it difficult to deal with these issues.
As a youth worker working alongside schools I can be directly involved with young people at this level. As a youth worker I can support a curriculum that can focus on the personal and social development of the young person.
This coming term I hope to focus my work on two areas working closely with Fowey River Academy:
- Development of a fruit and veg box delivery business
- Working with National Trust Rangers developing projects involving the young people
Developing relationships with the young people through these two ideas will give me the opportunity to find out where the young people are at. It will be hard but rewarding work.
