Engaging with youth outside the church walls is not just an extracurricular activity for the faithful; it is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible. The scriptures provide a strong foundation for why Christians should reach out to the younger generation wherever they may be. Here are some foundational scriptures that support the engagement with youth in diverse contexts:
The Great Commission – Matthew 28:19-20
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Jesus’ directive in the Great Commission compels Christians to go out into the world to mentor and teach. This is not limited to the church’s walls but is a global mandate, which includes reaching out to youth in their own environments—schools, community centres, or even sports fields.
Jesus and the Children – Mark 10:14
“When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’”
Jesus emphasised the importance of children and, by extension, youth, in the kingdom of God. He welcomed them and showed His disciples that they were to be included and valued. This extends beyond formal settings, highlighting the importance of engaging with young people wherever they might be found.
The Good Samaritan – Luke 10:30-37
In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus taught about loving our neighbour, which includes acts of kindness and service without discrimination. This can be applied to serving young people within our communities, not only within our congregations.
Salt and Light – Matthew 5:13-16
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Believers are called to be influencers in the world, preserving against the decay and illuminating the dark. Working with youth outside the church walls demonstrates the practical love and truth of the gospel in everyday life, serving as a witness to the world.
Training and Instruction – Proverbs 22:6
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
Although this verse is often cited in the context of parenting, it carries a broader wisdom about the importance of guiding the youth at an early age, wherever they are reachable—be it inside or outside the church.
These scriptures collectively show that engaging with youth is not just an activity; it’s a biblical mandate given to Christians. It underscores the need to meet young people right where they are, bringing the hope and love of the gospel into their everyday lives. Through this, not only is the youth impacted, but the broader community is as well.
