Think about it: words are powerful. They can build someone up, make them feel amazing, or they can tear them down and leave lasting scars. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love its use will eat its fruit.” That’s a pretty big deal! It means the words we speak actually have the power to create either life or death – not literally, most of the time, but emotionally and spiritually.
As young people, we’re surrounded by words – on social media, in school, from friends and family. It’s easy to get caught up in gossip, negativity, or even just thoughtless comments. But this verse reminds us that we have a choice. We can choose to use our words to build others up, to encourage them, to speak truth and love. Or, we can choose to use them carelessly, causing pain and hurt.
What kind of “fruit” do you want to “eat”? Do you want to create a harvest of joy, kindness, and love? Then choose your words wisely. Think before you speak. Ask God to help you use your tongue for good, to speak words that bring life, not death.
Prayer
Jesus, help me to be mindful of the words I speak. Show me when I’m about to say something hurtful or unkind. Fill my heart with love and kindness, so that my words will build others up and bring glory to you. Help me to use my tongue for life, not death. Amen.
