Ever feel like you’re trying to figure life out, but you’re just…stuck? Proverbs 1:7 says, “Fearing the LORD is the beginning of moral knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Whoa. That’s powerful. It’s saying that truly understanding right from wrong, and making good choices, starts with respecting God.
Think about it: when we recognise God’s power and love, it changes everything. It makes us want to live in a way that honours Him. It makes us want to learn and grow. It makes us realise that we don’t have all the answers, but God does.
The second part of the verse is a bit tougher. It talks about fools who despise wisdom and instruction. Ouch. Nobody wants to be a fool, right? But sometimes, we act like it when we ignore good advice, or think we know better than everyone else. True wisdom is recognising that we can always learn, and that God is the ultimate source of truth.
So, how do we start fearing the Lord? It’s not about being scared of Him. It’s about having a deep respect and awe for who He is. It’s about recognising His love and wanting to live a life that pleases Him. It’s about seeking His wisdom through prayer, reading the Bible, and connecting with other Christians.
Prayer
Jesus, I want to grow in wisdom and knowledge. Help me to fear you, not out of fear, but out of deep respect and love. Open my heart to your instruction and guide me in the right way. Help me to recognise when I’m being foolish and turn to you for guidance. Amen.
