Hey everyone, I am continuing my series on the 3 L’s of life. Today is lies.
We all know lying is wrong, right? It’s one of those things we learn from a young age. But sometimes, it’s easy to think of lying as just telling a little white lie, or maybe stretching the truth a bit. But as Christians, we’re called to something much bigger than just avoiding saying untrue things. We’re called to live a life of truth, a life that reflects God’s character. And that means more than just watching our words.
Think about it: A lie isn’t just a spoken word. It can be a whole way of life. It’s pretending to be someone you’re not, it’s being dishonest in your actions, it’s deceiving others for your own benefit. It’s like building your house on sand – it might look okay for a while, but eventually, it’s going to crumble.
The Bible has a lot to say about lying and dishonesty. Proverbs 12:22 tells us, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” That’s a pretty strong statement! And in John 8:44, Jesus says that the devil is the “father of lies.” That shows us just how serious lying is. It separates us from God and aligns us with the very source of evil.
Living a lie can take many forms. It might be exaggerating your achievements to impress people, gossiping about someone behind their back, or even just being fake and two-faced. It’s about having a disconnect between what you say and what you actually do, between who you are on the inside and how you present yourself to the world.
So, how do we avoid falling into this trap? Here are a few tips to help us make our language holy:
- Be honest with yourself: Take some time to reflect on your own behaviour. Are there any areas where you’re not being completely truthful?
- Think before you speak: Proverbs 15:28 says, “The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.” Take a moment to consider the impact of your words before you say them.
- Speak the truth in love: Sometimes, telling the truth can be difficult. But it’s important to do it in a kind and loving way. Ephesians 4:15 says, “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
- Surround yourself with honest people: Choose friends who will encourage you to live a life of integrity.
- Pray for guidance: Ask God to help you to be truthful in all that you say and do.
Living a life of truth isn’t always easy, but it’s the only way to truly experience the fullness of God’s love and blessing.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for being the source of all truth. Forgive us for the times we have been dishonest, whether in our words or our actions. Help us to live lives of integrity, reflecting your character in all that we do. Give us the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to speak the truth in love. Amen.
Blessing
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
