“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” Isaiah 52:7
This verse is a powerful image of hope and deliverance. Imagine someone running over the mountains, exhausted but determined, bringing vital news to a city under siege. This is the picture Isaiah paints. But what is this “good news”?
What is the good news?
The good news isn’t just any good news; it’s news of peace, happiness, and salvation. It’s the declaration that “Your God reigns!” This means that despite appearances, God is in control. He is sovereign, even in the midst of chaos. For young people today, bombarded with negative news and social pressures, this is a vital message. It’s a reminder that there is a bigger picture, a divine plan unfolding even when things seem bleak.
How do we find peace?
The verse links peace to the arrival of the messenger and the message. True peace isn’t found in avoiding problems, but in knowing that God is present and active, even within them. This peace is a gift from God, offered through the good news of salvation. It’s a peace that transcends our circumstances (Philippians 4:7). It’s not the absence of trouble, but the presence of God in trouble.
How does God reign when there is so much strife, toil, and stress?
This is the question many young people grapple with. We see wars, poverty, injustice, and personal struggles. How can God be reigning? The answer lies in understanding God’s reign is not always about immediate, visible changes. Often, it’s a quiet, underlying work of grace, transforming hearts and lives. It’s about planting seeds of hope and righteousness that will eventually bear fruit. God’s reign is also about providing strength and comfort to those who are struggling. He doesn’t always remove the hardship, but He promises to be with us through it (Isaiah 43:2).
When people struggle against sin and try to live a good life:
This verse offers encouragement. The struggle is real, but it’s not in vain. The pursuit of a good life, aligned with God’s will, is part of His plan. The good news is that we don’t have to do it alone. God offers forgiveness and strength through Jesus Christ. The “good news of salvation” is precisely for those who recognise their need for help.

A prayer
Dear God, thank you for the good news of peace, happiness, and salvation. Help us to recognise your reign in our lives, even when things are difficult. Grant us your peace that transcends all understanding. Give us strength to live good lives and to trust in your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
