Hosea is a powerful book in the Old Testament, full of strong emotions and warnings. Chapter 4 paints a pretty bleak picture of Israel’s relationship with God. It’s not always easy to read, but it holds some important lessons for us today.
What’s Hosea About?
Hosea was a prophet who lived in Israel during a time of great spiritual and moral decline. God told Hosea to marry a woman named Gomer, who was unfaithful to him. This marriage was a symbol of God’s relationship with Israel – God was faithful, but Israel was unfaithful, turning away to other gods. It’s a tough story, but it shows us how much God loves us, even when we mess up.
Breaking Down Hosea 4
This chapter is a list of charges against Israel. Let’s look at some key points:
Lack of Knowledge of God (Verse 1, 6): “There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and there is no knowledge of God in the land… My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” This isn’t just about not knowing about God, but not knowing God personally. It’s like knowing about a famous person but never actually meeting them.
Breaking Covenants (Verse 2): “Swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery are rampant; one act of bloodshed follows another.” This shows the consequences of turning away from God. When we forget God, it affects how we treat others.
Consequences of Sin (Verse 3): “Therefore the land mourns, and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea are also perishing.” Sin has consequences, not just for us, but for the world around us.
Rejection of God’s Word (Verse 6): “Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.” This is a serious warning. When we ignore God’s word, we’re cutting ourselves off from his guidance and blessing.
Connecting to Other Verses
Romans 1:18-32: Paul describes a similar situation in the Roman world, where people turned away from God and faced the consequences. It shows that this isn’t just an Old Testament problem; it’s a human problem.
John 14:6: Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This tells us that knowing God is possible through Jesus.
How Does This Point to Jesus?
Hosea’s story, though painful, points to the need for a saviour. Israel’s unfaithfulness showed that they couldn’t keep their promises to God. Jesus, on the other hand, was perfectly faithful. He came to bridge the gap between us and God, offering forgiveness and reconciliation. He is the ultimate expression of God’s steadfast love.
How Does This Apply to Us Today?
Even though we live in a different time, the core message of Hosea 4 is still relevant. We can also be tempted to “forget God” by:
- Prioritising other things: Spending all our time on social media, video games, or other activities without making time for God.
- Ignoring God’s word: Not reading the Bible or praying regularly.
- Making bad choices: Engaging in behaviours that we know are wrong.
Challenging and Uplifting Questions
- What are some things in your life that might be distracting you from God?
- How can you make more time for God in your daily routine?
- How does knowing that Jesus is the way to know God change how you view this chapter?
- What does it mean to you that God still loves us even when we turn away from him?
A Practical Example
Imagine you have a really important exam coming up. You know you need to study, but you keep getting distracted by your phone. You end up not studying enough and doing poorly on the exam. This is similar to what happens when we ignore God. We know what’s right, but we choose to do something else, and we face the consequences.
A Prayer
Dear God, we confess that we sometimes forget you. We get distracted by other things and make choices that lead us away from you. Forgive us for these times. Help us to know you better, to seek your guidance, and to live lives that honour you. Thank you for sending Jesus to show us the way back to you. Amen.
A Blessing
May you be blessed with a heart that seeks after God. May you find strength and guidance in his word. May you know the forgiveness and love that comes through Jesus Christ. And may you live a life that reflects God’s goodness to the world. Amen.
