Project Application Information
I have spent time with the young people and developing ideas with them around the development of the
school farm. Some concepts are set in stone and some are new.
As a team we have already started to build an orchard and have planted 10 trees and underplanted them
with borage, strawberries and a variety of other plants. We have already started to mulch under these
trees. The mulch is needed to kill off the grass. Grass is not beneficial to orchards often robbing the
ground of beneficial nutrients whilst not providing any help to the other plants. We underplant beneficial
plants. Strawberries for instance will provide ground cover and provide food as well. Borage will dig deep
and encourage beneficial insects. At the end of the season it can become a fertiliser. Seeds are edible
and can be used in salads.
We would like £2200 towards fully planting out our orchard and also mulching the whole area.
Alongside this we would also like £850 in order to finish fencing the area, providing a wind break and
also keeping stray balls away from the site. We are located next to a football pitch!
As part of the educational element of the project we want to build a stream. It will be pleasant to listen to
the stream running and already have bought a solar powered water pump which will water our polytunnel
and raised beds. It will be additionally used to run water in the stream. Educationally we will build an area
to teach the use of water turbines in electricity generation.
We need £1250 towards buying a pond liner and water storage containers.
Finally, in order to generate income, fun and as a further educational tool we would like to purchase two
bicycle generators. These will encourage fitness as the young people cycle to power music and make a
smoothie. They can be used in the many festivals in Cornwall to earn some money and as an
educational tool they will enable us to teach about alternative energy sources. The cost to buy two is £4600.
Total funding needed is £89
