I’m starting a series looking at 3 L’s of life and the dangers they pose to Christian and also to society. Starting with Language, I move on to Lies and then to Lust.
We all know swearing is a no-go for Christians, right? But have you ever thought about how much more there is to our language than just avoiding bad words? Our words have power. They can build people up or tear them down. They can honour God or mock Him. As Christians, our language should reflect our faith. It’s not just about what we don’t say, but also about what we do say.
Think about it: gossip, complaining, sarcastic digs – these things aren’t exactly “swearing,” but they’re definitely not building others up or glorifying God. James 3:8 tells us, “But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” Whoa! That’s a powerful image, isn’t it? Our tongues can be incredibly destructive if we’re not careful.
But there’s good news! We’re not on our own in this. With God’s help, we can learn to tame our tongues. Colossians 4:6 encourages us: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” “Seasoned with salt” means our words should be flavourful, interesting, and positive, not bland or hurtful.
So, how can we make our language holy? Here are a few tips:
- Think before you speak: Pause and consider what you’re about to say. Is it kind? Is it true? Is it necessary?
- Focus on the positive: Instead of complaining or gossiping, try to find something positive to say. A genuine compliment can make someone’s day!
- Avoid gossip: If you hear gossip, don’t participate. Change the subject or politely excuse yourself.
- Speak with grace: Even when you disagree with someone, try to express yourself respectfully.
- Pray for help: Ask God to help you control your tongue and use your words for good. Psalm 19:14 says, “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
Our words are a gift from God. Let’s use them wisely, to build each other up, to share our faith, and to glorify Him.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for the gift of language. We know our tongues can be powerful, but we also know we sometimes use our words in ways that hurt others and don’t honour you. Please forgive us. Help us to think before we speak and to use our words to build others up and share your love. Help us to speak with grace and kindness, always. Amen.
Blessing
May the words of your mouth and the meditations of your heart be pleasing in God’s sight, now and always. Go in peace.
