Ever been in a situation where someone was mean to you, and your first instinct was to snap back? It’s totally understandable! But Romans 12:21 flips the script: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” It’s saying, don’t let negativity win. Don’t let someone else’s bad behaviour drag you down to their level.
This isn’t easy. It takes serious strength to respond to hate with love, to anger with kindness. But think about it: what happens when you throw more fuel on a fire? It gets bigger, right? The same goes for negativity. But when you respond with good, it can actually stop the cycle. It can diffuse the situation and even change someone’s heart.
This doesn’t mean being a doormat. It means choosing to rise above, choosing to be a light in a dark place. It means showing the world – and ourselves – that love is stronger than hate. It’s a challenge, for sure, but with God’s help, we can overcome evil with good.
Prayer
Jesus, help me to not be overcome by evil. Give me the strength and courage to respond to negativity with kindness and love. Show me how to be a light in the world, reflecting your goodness even when it’s hard. Amen.
