Ever heard the saying “monkey see, monkey do” (see explanation below)? It’s true, isn’t it? We often pick up habits and behaviours from the people around us. That’s why it’s so important to choose our influences wisely. 3 John 1:11 puts it perfectly: “Dear friend, do not imitate what is bad but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does what is bad has not seen God.”
Monkey See, Monkey Do is imitating observed behaviours, especially without critical thought. Or simply put We copy what they see others doing.
This verse is a powerful reminder that as people, we’re constantly making choices about who we want to be and what kind of life we want to live. We’re surrounded by so many different examples, both good and bad. This verse encourages us to be intentional about what we imitate. We should strive to follow the examples of those who are doing good, those who are living lives that reflect God’s love.
It’s not always easy, is it? Sometimes it feels like bad influences are everywhere. But remember, we have a choice. We can choose to focus on the good, to surround ourselves with positive role models, and to seek God’s guidance in every decision we make. When we do that, we grow closer to God and become more like Him.
So, let’s choose to imitate what is good. Let’s be a light in the world, reflecting God’s love and making a positive impact on those around us.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for showing us the way to live. Help us to choose wisely the examples we follow. Surround us with good influences and give us the strength to resist temptation. Help us to do good and to reflect your love in all that we do. Amen.
