Introduction
What does it mean to be a child of God? It’s more than just believing in God; it’s about entering into a loving relationship with Him as our Father. This study will explore what it means to become a child of God, how we can connect with Him through prayer and worship, and what the Bible says about this special relationship.
What does it mean to be God’s cherished son/daughter?
Adoption into God’s family: When we believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him as our Saviour, God adopts us into His family. We become His sons and daughters, receiving all the rights and privileges of children of God. (Galatians 4:4-7)
Loved and cherished: As God’s children, we are deeply loved and cherished by Him. He cares for us, provides for us, and protects us. (1 John 3:1)
Heirs to God’s promises: We become heirs to God’s promises, including eternal life and a home in heaven. (Romans 8:17)
New identity: We receive a new identity as children of God. We are no longer defined by our past or our mistakes, but by our relationship with God. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
How to become a child of God
Believe in Jesus Christ: The Bible tells us that we become children of God by believing in Jesus Christ. (John 1:12)
Repent of our sins: We must turn away from our sins and ask God for forgiveness. (Acts 3:19)
Receive the Holy Spirit: God gives us His Holy Spirit to live inside us and empower us to live as His children. (Galatians 3:26-29)
Connecting with Father God
Prayer
Prayer is how we communicate with God. We can talk to Him about anything and everything. (Philippians 4:6-7)
Example: The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) teaches us how to pray, including praising God, asking for our needs, and seeking forgiveness.
Worship
Worship is expressing our love and adoration to God. We can worship Him through music, singing, praise, and thanksgiving. (Psalm 95:1-2)
Reading the Bible
The Bible is God’s Word to us. It teaches us about God, His love, and His plan for our lives. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Example: The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) teach us how to live a life that is pleasing to God.
Bible Verses for Insight
Old Testament
Psalm 103:13: “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”
Isaiah 64:8: “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
New Testament
John 1:12: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
Romans 8:14-17: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
1 John 3:1: “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
