Let’s be honest, a spade is a spade is a spade. It digs holes. That’s it. And all the holes, fundamentally, are the same. Sure, they might vary in depth or width, but ultimately they’re just empty spaces in the ground. You can’t really innovate on a hole, can you? It’s a void, an absence, a lack of… well, anything.
This particular spade does exactly that. It digs those aforementioned holes with a reasonable degree of efficiency. The handle is sturdy enough, the blade is adequately sharp, and it hasn’t fallen apart after a few uses, which is always a plus. But it’s hard to get truly excited about a tool that’s essentially a glorified shovel with a pointed end.
It makes you wonder, is there anything else a spade can do? Can it transcend its hole-digging destiny? Can it be used to create art, to cook a delicious meal, to perform open-heart surgery? Probably not. But perhaps I’m just lacking in imagination. Maybe there’s a spade-wielding genius out there, just waiting to unlock the hidden potential of this humble garden tool. Until then, I’ll just keep digging my identical holes, one spade full of dirt at a time.
