There is a danger when we read the Bible. We decide whether something is true or false. We accuse God of telling a lie or making something up or we try to argue that it might really have happened like this. But, it is not up to me to pick and choose or to decide what I believe or what I don’t when I read the Bible. The danger is when I say Noah did not exist, there was no great flood, it is only a short step to say, I don’t trust God with my salvation, with supplying my daily needs.
When I believe that God’s Word is true, it doesn’t mean I understand it all and can explain what every passage means. I would need to be God to be able to do that! But when I say God’s Word is true I can stop struggling and enjoy God’s love, his care and believe him at his word when he says to me I love you.
Taking God at his word produces more question than answers and one day I might know the answers, but not for now. When we raise children we start by saying to a baby goo goo gaa gaa, the child would not understand if I sat down and explained the dynamics of a tree guild. Does that mean because the baby doesn’t understand or know, that a tree guild doesn’t exist or it is not right. Of course not. I garden using tree guilds, some gardeners would say I don’t know what I am talking about. Who is right? Well that is for you to answer.
The Bible is an amazing book. It can be read by a six year old and enjoyed and understood, but it can also be read by me, a 58 year old and understood at another level. It is exciting to sit down and discover a Biblical truth taught to me by a six year old. It needs to be read though. You can read it alone or you could get together with friends and read it together. It is a book you can pick up and read or a book you spend 3 hours studying a few lines. It is a book to be enjoyed, believed, challenged, shocked, discover. It is a story book, a history book, an ethical book, a moral book, it is God’s plan to save us, his creation.
So folks today, just believe God.
