Egg-cellent News from the Hen House!
We’ve got some clucking good news to share from our little corner of Cornwall! Our flock of 11 lovely ladies (aka, our chickens!) are really getting into the swing of things, and we’re seeing a wonderful increase in egg production. On average, we’re now collecting around 8 eggs a day, and while it’s not every single day, it’s happening about 5 days out of 7.
As many of you know, chickens are very sensitive to the seasons. With the warmer weather finally arriving, longer daylight hours, and the abundance of fresh greens for them to nibble on, our hens are naturally laying more eggs. It’s a classic sign of spring and summer!
Did you know that:
- Chickens need around 14-16 hours of daylight to produce eggs consistently? That’s why winter egg production often drops.
- A hen’s diet plays a huge role in egg quality and quantity. Our girls are fed a balanced diet and enjoy foraging in our garden.
- The colour of an egg’s shell is determined by the hen’s breed.
- Fresh eggs have a richer flavour and firmer whites than older eggs.
We’re so pleased to be able to share these fresh, delicious eggs with our local community. We sell 6 eggs for £2, which helps us support our little farm and cover the cost of chicken feed and other essentials. So, if you’re in the area and fancy some truly free-range, happy hen eggs, please do get in touch! Your support means the world to us (and our chickens!). (Rich 07546 804439).
We are so pleased that our hens are so happy and that we are able to share the results with you all.
