Mark 8:14-21: Bread, Leaven, and Missing the Point

Jesus and his disciples are on a boat, and they’ve forgotten to bring bread. Only one loaf is left. Jesus warns them to “beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.”

The Confusion

The disciples get caught up on the literal meaning of yeast (used to make bread rise), thinking Jesus is scolding them for forgetting to pack enough. But Jesus is talking about something deeper.

Jesus uses “yeast” as a metaphor for the teachings and attitudes of the Pharisees and Herod. Their ideas, though seemingly small, could spread and corrupt the true message of God’s kingdom, just like a bit of yeast affects a whole batch of dough.
