This passage wraps up Mark’s Gospel with a whirlwind of events following Jesus’ resurrection. It’s packed with action and instruction, leaving us with a clear mission and a sense of wonder.
What Happened?
- Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene, who had witnessed his crucifixion. He instructs her to tell the disciples about his resurrection and ascension.
- The disciples initially doubt Mary’s report. Jesus then appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, but they don’t recognise him at first. He explains the Scriptures to them, revealing how his suffering and resurrection were foretold.
- Finally, Jesus appears to the eleven disciples, rebuking their unbelief. He gives them the Great Commission: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15).
- He also promises them signs that will accompany believers: they will cast out demons, speak in new tongues, handle snakes safely, and be unharmed if they drink poison.
- The disciples go out and preach everywhere, with the Lord working with them and confirming their message through signs.
Why is this Important?
This passage emphasises several key points:
- The Reality of the Resurrection: Jesus’ resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith. It proves his victory over death and validates his claims about himself.
- The Importance of Witness: Jesus calls his followers to share the good news of his resurrection with the whole world. This mission is still relevant today.
- The Power of the Gospel: Jesus promises that his followers will be empowered by the Holy Spirit to perform miraculous signs as they spread the gospel.
- The Authority of Jesus: Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth. He is Lord of all.
