This passage, found at the very end of Mark’s Gospel, tells the amazing story of Jesus’ resurrection. It’s a pivotal moment in the Christian faith, filled with wonder and awe.
What Happened?
Early on Sunday morning, three women – Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome – went to Jesus’ tomb, carrying spices to anoint his body. They were worried about how they would move the massive stone that sealed the tomb. But when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away!
Inside the tomb, they encountered a young man dressed in white, who told them that Jesus had risen from the dead. He instructed them to tell the disciples and Peter to go to Galilee, where they would see Jesus, as He had promised. The women fled from the tomb, filled with fear and amazement, and they didn’t tell anyone what they had seen.
Why is this Important?
This passage declares the central truth of Christianity – Jesus Christ conquered death! The empty tomb proves that He is the Son of God, fulfilling His promises and offering hope to all who believe in Him. The resurrection also marks the beginning of the “Great Commission”, where Jesus’ followers are commanded to spread the Good News throughout the world.
