This passage in Mark’s Gospel presents a powerful encounter between Jesus and a rich young man, followed by a crucial lesson for Jesus’ disciples on the true meaning of discipleship.
The Encounter
A rich young man, seemingly earnest in his faith, kneels before Jesus and asks, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus responds by reminding him of the commandments and the young man confidently claims to have kept them all since his youth. Jesus, looking at him with love, challenges him to sell all his possessions, give the money to the poor, and follow him. The young man is deeply saddened by this and walks away, unable to part with his wealth.
Jesus’ Teaching
Jesus then turns to his disciples and makes a shocking statement: “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” This surprises the disciples, who assumed wealth was a sign of God’s blessing. Jesus explains that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter God’s kingdom. The disciples are even more astonished, wondering, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus assures them that with God, all things are possible, even salvation for the rich.
The Cost of Discipleship
Peter points out that they have left everything to follow Jesus. Jesus acknowledges their sacrifice and promises that those who have left everything for his sake and the gospel’s will receive a hundredfold in this life and eternal life in the age to come. However, he also warns that many who are first will be last, and the last first.
