In this passage, we encounter Jesus interacting with children, a scene that might seem simple at first glance but holds deep spiritual truths.
What Happened?
Parents brought their little children to Jesus, hoping he would bless them. However, the disciples, perhaps thinking Jesus was too important for such matters, tried to send them away. Jesus was displeased with this reaction and insisted the children be brought to him. He welcomed them, embraced them, and blessed them.
Why is this Important?
Jesus used this interaction to teach an important lesson about the kingdom of God: “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” (Mark 10:15).
What Does This Mean for Us?
Jesus wasn’t simply saying we should act childish. Instead, he highlighted specific childlike qualities essential for entering God’s kingdom:
- Trust: Children inherently trust their parents and foster parents. Similarly, we need to trust God completely, relying on His guidance and provision.
- Humility: Children recognise their dependence on others. We must acknowledge our dependence on God, realising we cannot earn our way into His kingdom.
- Openness: Children are open to learning and experiencing new things. We need to approach God with open hearts, ready to receive His love and truth.
- Lack of Pretence: Children are genuine and transparent. We should come before God honestly, without trying to hide our flaws or shortcomings.
