Esther opens with a glimpse into the opulent world of King Ahasuerus (later identified as Xerxes I), who ruled over a vast Persian empire from India to Ethiopia. He’s not just any king; he’s a king of kings, with power over 127 provinces.
The Scene: Imagine a massive party, the likes of which you’ve never seen. It lasts for six whole months, showcasing the king’s immense wealth and power. The royal palace gardens are decked out in the finest fabrics – white and violet linen, held by cords of fine linen and purple on silver rings and marble pillars.
The guests lounge on luxurious couches made of gold and silver, set upon a mosaic floor of colourful stones. They drink from golden cups, each one unique, and the wine flows freely. It’s a scene of pure excess, meant to impress and overwhelm everyone present.
But why such a massive party?
- To flex his power: Ahasuerus wants everyone to know just how powerful and wealthy he is. This party is a way to show off his kingdom’s riches and influence.
- To celebrate his victories: He might be celebrating military conquests or other accomplishments.
- To enjoy life’s pleasures: Ahasuerus may simply be a king who enjoys the finer things in life, and this party is the ultimate indulgence.
