These verses, right at the beginning of the Bible, give us a glimpse into something amazing: God resting. It might seem a bit strange at first – doesn’t God have endless energy? But there’s a lot we can learn from this moment.
What Happened?
After six days of creating the universe and everything in it, God finished his work. On the seventh day, he rested. It wasn’t because he was tired, but because he was done. He looked at what he had made and saw that it was good. Then, he made the seventh day special, a day of rest, a holy day.
Why is This Important?
God’s rest isn’t just about taking a break. It shows us a few really important things:
- Completion: God’s work was complete. He didn’t need to keep creating or fixing things. This tells us that God’s creation is good and finished.
- Rhythm: God created a rhythm of work and rest. Six days of work, one day of rest. This pattern isn’t just for God, it’s for us too. We need rest to be healthy and whole.
- Blessing: God blessed the seventh day and made it holy. This means it’s special, set apart. It’s a day to connect with God, to enjoy his creation, and to rest our bodies and minds.
Questions for Thought

- What does it mean to you that God’s creation is ‘good’?
- How good are you at following a rhythm of work and rest?
