Genesis 3:1-7: The First Temptation – A Story That Still Speaks to Us Today

What Happened

• The serpent, a symbol of evil, questions Eve about God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

• Eve is tempted by the idea of becoming like God, knowing good and evil, and she eats the fruit.
• She shares the fruit with Adam, and they both disobey God.
• Their eyes are opened, they realise they are naked, and they feel ashamed. They try to hide from God.

Why is this Important?

This story explains how sin entered the world, bringing with it pain, suffering, and separation from God. It’s the starting point for understanding our own struggles with temptation and disobedience.

What Does This Mean for Us?

• We are all susceptible to temptation. The serpent’s tactics – questioning God’s words, appealing to our desires, and promising us something we shouldn’t have – are the same ones we face today.
• We need to be on guard against doubt and disobedience. When we start questioning God’s commands or His goodness, we’re on dangerous ground.
• Our choices have consequences. Adam and Eve’s disobedience led to their separation from God and brought pain and suffering into the world. Our choices also affect us and those around us.
• God is merciful even when we disobey. Even after Adam and Eve sinned, God provided them with clothing and a way forward. He continues to offer us forgiveness and a relationship with Him through Jesus.
