“You can take the man out of the boy, but you can’t take the boy out of the man.” It’s a cliché, sure, but like many clichés, it holds a nugget of truth. We carry our childhoods with us, tucked away in the corners of our minds, influencing our actions and reactions in ways we often don’t even realise.
Think about it. That thrill you get from a perfectly timed snowball fight? The way your face lights up at the sight of a particularly impressive firework display? The inexplicable urge to jump in a puddle, even when you’re wearing your best shoes? These are echoes of the boy (or girl) within, those moments of pure, unfiltered joy that remind us of a simpler time.
It’s not just about the fun stuff, though. The anxieties and insecurities we developed as children can linger too. That fear of public speaking might stem from a childhood experience of forgetting your lines in a school play. That tendency to people – could be rooted in a desire for approval that was instilled in us during our formative years.
The key, I think, isn’t to try and completely erase the boy or girl within. That’s impossible, and probably not even desirable. Instead, it’s about acknowledging their presence, understanding how they influence us, and learning to integrate them into our adult selves.
Sometimes, we need to let that inner child out to play. To embrace the spontaneity, the curiosity, the sheer joy of experiencing the world with fresh eyes. Other times, we need to gently guide them, reassuring them that the world isn’t as scary as it once seemed, and that we have the tools now to navigate its complexities.
Ultimately, that little boy or girl is a part of who we are. They shaped us, moulded us, and continue to inform our experiences. By acknowledging and accepting them, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and live more authentic, fulfilling lives. So, the next time you find yourself inexplicably drawn to a swing or overcome with the urge to build a sandcastle, don’t fight it. Embrace the boy or girl within, and let them remind you of the magic that still exists in the world.
