The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven

Matthew Henry: We are taught to draw near to God with a filial confidence, as children to a father, able and ready to help us. Yet, with a holy reverence of his majesty. He is in heaven, and we are on earth; therefore in prayer we must look up with an eye of faith.

Hallowed be thy name

Matthew Henry: We must begin our prayers with praising God. We give glory to God. We pray that God would enable us and others to glorify him in all that whereby he has made himself known.

Thy kingdom come

Matthew Henry: We pray that the kingdom of grace may be advanced, that the gospel may spread and be successful, and that Christ’s kingdom may be set up in all the world.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven

Matthew Henry: We pray that God’s will may be done, and his authority submitted to, by men on earth, as readily and cheerfully as it is by the angels in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

Matthew Henry: We pray for the necessary supports and comforts of this present life, which are the gifts of God, and must be asked of him. We pray that God would give us, not sell it us, nor lend it us, but give it.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors

Matthew Henry: We pray that God would forgive all our sins, original and actual, in thought, word, and deed. And we must pray that we may be forgiven as we forgive others.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

Matthew Henry: We pray that God would not leave us to ourselves, to our own weakness and folly, and the evil of our own hearts; but that he would keep us from the snares of the devil, the world, and the flesh.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever

Matthew Henry: We ascribe to God, and to him alone, the kingdom, the power, and the glory. All that whereby God is exalted, and whereby we give him glory, are his forever.

Amen

Matthew Henry: It expresses our earnest desires toward God that these things may be granted to us, and our believing hopes that they will be granted.
