Earlier there were a lot of priests, for they died and had to be replaced. But Jesus’ priesthood is permanent. He’s there from now to eternity to save everyone who comes to God through him, always on the job to speak up for them.
Hebrews 7:25 MSG
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a priest as “one authorised to perform the sacred rites of a religion especially as a mediatory agent between humans and God.” Priests became the go-betweens people and God. In the Old Testament they were set apart.
When Jesus died and rose again He became our high priest. He now fulfils the role of the Old Testament priest permanently. What does this mean?
- Jesus is our sacrifice for all time – He only had to do this once
- Jesus unlike men was appointed by God from God not from among men
- He is always on the job to speak up for us.
- He became our mediator
- We don’t need anyone else ever again
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen.
