God, the one and only—
Psalm 62 v 5-6
I’ll wait as long as he says.
Everything I hope for comes from him,
so why not?
He’s solid rock under my feet,
breathing room for my soul,
An impregnable castle:
I’m set for life.
Today, our western lifestyle is too quick. Everything we want, we want now. No longer prepared to wait, we get loans to buy or another credit card. We no longer wait.
Our lifestyle today does not have space in it… It has even less silence. In our verse today the Psalmist declares, “I’ll wait as long as he says”. The Psalmist is expecting it to happen. The word wait can mean a variety of things.
- Waiting (obviously!)
- To wait or look eagerly for
- To lie in wait for
- To wait for, linger for
It seems the Psalmist is conveying a ‘hope’ for. The Psalmist is not stopping life, life continues around them. But whilst they continue to live, they also wait or hope. It is a refreshing reminder today, that we can wait. There is a positive in that waiting, we are anticipating the arrival. As I wait for God to act upon or answer my prayers, I know that he is my rock, whatever the answer, I can rely on him to answer perfectly.
I am practising my waiting.
