3 John is a short but powerful letter written by the apostle John, also known as “the Elder.” In it, he addresses Gaius, a beloved friend and fellow believer. While brief, this letter carries significant messages about love, truth, and hospitality, all of which are relevant to young people today.
The Elder’s Love for Gaius (v. 1-2)
John opens his letter expressing his deep affection for Gaius, emphasising that his love is rooted in truth. He prays for Gaius’ well-being, both physically and spiritually, hoping that Gaius’ soul prospers as much as his body. This reminds us that true Christian love cares for the whole person, not just their spiritual side.
Walking in Truth (v. 3-4)
John rejoices that Gaius is walking in truth, which means living in accordance with God’s Word and His character. John’s greatest joy comes from seeing his spiritual children living out their faith genuinely. This highlights the importance of aligning our actions with our beliefs, striving for integrity and authenticity in our Christian walk.
Hospitality and Support (v. 5-8)
John commends Gaius for his hospitality towards other believers, especially those travelling to share the gospel. He encourages Gaius to continue supporting these missionaries, as it is a worthy cause that aligns with God’s work. This challenges us to be generous and hospitable, recognising the value of those who dedicate their lives to spreading the good news of Jesus.
Opposing False Teachers (v. 9-10)
John warns Gaius about Diotrephes, a divisive figure who opposes John’s authority and refuses to welcome other believers. John encourages Gaius to imitate good, not evil, and to avoid associating with those who spread false teachings. This reminds us to be discerning, testing everything against the truth of Scripture and distancing ourselves from those who lead others astray.
Following the Example of Demetrius (v. 11-12)
In contrast to Diotrephes, John praises Demetrius, a man of good reputation, confirmed by others and by the truth itself. John encourages Gaius to follow Demetrius’ example, suggesting that we should surround ourselves with godly influences who inspire us to live righteously.
