Chapter 4 of the book of Ruth brings us a happy ending to Ruth and Naomi’s story and the start of something new and wonderful!
What Happens in Chapter 4:
- Boaz Takes Action: Boaz is a man of his word. He goes to the city gate, where important decisions were made, and talks to another relative of Naomi’s who is closer than him. Boaz wants to make sure this relative has the first chance to help Naomi, as was the custom.
- The Other Relative Steps Aside: This other relative is a bit hesitant. He doesn’t want to risk losing his own inheritance by helping Naomi. He tells Boaz it’s okay for him to take on the responsibility.
- Boaz Becomes the Redeemer: Boaz is excited! He publicly announces he will marry Ruth and buy back Naomi’s land. Everyone is happy for them and wishes them well.
- Ruth and Boaz Get Married: Ruth and Boaz get married, and God blesses them with a son named Obed. Naomi is overjoyed and helps take care of her grandson. Everyone sees Obed as a gift from God and a sign of hope for the future.
- Obed’s Legacy: Obed grows up and becomes the father of Jesse, who becomes the father of the famous King David!
