Mark 9:14-29: Faith and Healing

This passage in Mark’s Gospel is a dramatic story about a father’s desperation, a boy’s suffering, and the power of faith in Jesus.

The Scene

Jesus comes down from a mountain with Peter, James, and John to find a commotion. A crowd surrounds his disciples, who are arguing with a man. The man’s son is possessed by an evil spirit that makes him mute and causes violent seizures. The father is desperate for help and turns to Jesus.

What Happens

  • The Father’s Plea: The father explains his son’s condition and asks Jesus to have compassion and heal him. He expresses a mix of faith and doubt, saying, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
  • Jesus’ Rebuke and Healing: Jesus rebukes the evil spirit, which causes a final, dramatic seizure in the boy, before leaving him. The boy appears lifeless, but Jesus takes his hand and helps him up, restoring him to health.
  • The Disciples’ Question: Later, the disciples ask Jesus why they couldn’t cast out the spirit. Jesus explains that this kind of spirit can only be driven out through prayer and fasting.
