This passage in Mark’s Gospel paints a beautiful picture of Jesus’ love and care for children. It’s a reminder that no matter how young or insignificant we might feel, we are deeply valued by God.
What happened?
Parents brought their little ones to Jesus, hoping he would bless them. However, the disciples, perhaps thinking Jesus was too busy or important for such matters, tried to send them away. Jesus was displeased and rebuked them, saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14).
Why is this important?
Jesus’ actions and words in this story reveal several important truths:
- Children are precious to God: Jesus welcomed the children with open arms, demonstrating their value and importance in His eyes.
- The Kingdom of God belongs to those with childlike faith: Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” (Mark 10:15). This emphasises the importance of approaching God with humility, trust, and openness, like a child.
- Jesus welcomes all who come to him: Regardless of age, social status, or background, Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to Him with a sincere heart.
Questions for Reflection
- How does this story make you feel about your own relationship with God?
- What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God “like a little child”?
- What are some qualities of children that we can learn from as we seek to grow closer to God?
- How can we apply this lesson to our relationships with others, especially those who may seem less important or influential?
- In what ways can we show love and care to the children in our lives, just as Jesus did?
Challenge
Take some time this week to reflect on your own attitude towards God and others. Are you approaching them with humility, trust, and openness? If not, ask God to help you cultivate these childlike qualities. Remember, no matter how young or insignificant you may feel, you are deeply loved and valued by God.
