Jesus is about to enter the scene.
Verse 7: “And this was his message: ‘After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.'”
So, John the Baptist is still in the spotlight, but now he’s pointing beyond himself. He’s saying, “Listen up, folks! I’m not the main act. Someone way more awesome is on the way. I’m not even worthy to do the humble job of untying his sandals!”
Verse 8: “I baptise you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.”
Now, this is where it gets exciting! John’s baptising with water, which is a symbolic way of saying, “Clean up your act, get ready for a fresh start.” But he’s making it clear that Jesus is going to take it to a whole new level. Jesus isn’t just about an external cleanse; He’s bringing something deeper, something inside us—the Holy Spirit.
Imagine it like upgrading from a splash in a puddle to diving into the deep ocean. John’s water baptism is a preparation, but Jesus’ baptism is an immersion into the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit.
So we are called to get ready, for Jesus to change our hearts and to share the news, like John, that Jesus is here.
