Chapter 4: A Turning Point in the Story

Chapter 4 of the book of Esther is a pivotal moment where the characters face a crisis and make difficult decisions.

Overview

  • Mordecai’s Mourning: Mordecai learns of Haman’s evil plot to destroy the Jews and is overcome with grief. He tears his clothes, puts on sackcloth and ashes (signs of mourning), and cries out loudly in the city.
  • Esther’s Concern: Esther’s servants inform her of Mordecai’s distress, and she is deeply troubled. She sends him new clothes, but he refuses to wear them.
  • Mordecai’s Message: Mordecai sends a message to Esther, explaining the danger facing their people and urging her to go to the king and plead for their lives. He reminds her that her position as queen may be for such a time as this.
  • Esther’s Hesitation: Esther is afraid to approach the king unsummoned, as it is against the law and could result in her death.
  • Mordecai’s Warning: Mordecai sends another message, reminding Esther that if she remains silent, deliverance will come from another place, but she and her family will perish. He challenges her to consider her own role in God’s plan.
  • Esther’s Decision: Esther resolves to go to the king, even though it could cost her life. She asks Mordecai to gather all the Jews in Susa to fast and pray for her for three days. She and her maids will do the same. Then, she will approach the king, “and if I perish, I perish.”
