I love gardening. It is rewarding, refreshing, rejuvenating and completed at the pace of a snail. Hopefully without the snail. I have become excited about gardening after reading articles about permaculture, no-dig gardening, food forest, hydroponics, aquaponics and working with nature rather than against.
In England today we have a system of monoculture which is destructive and has destroyed much of our English landscape. We plough when we should be gentle and where hundreds of birds fed behind our tractors we now see none. I am sad.
And we complain about the destruction of the rain forests around the globe. What about our forests? England has a natural forest outlook. If you leave a field to do nothing, within 10 years you will have a forest. And I would love to see forests return.
Our back garden is a small attempt at a food forest… I would love 10 acres and have a real attempt at developing a food forest. My dream to build an orchard has been with me for a long time, it would be amazing and then to under-plant it with perennials and cooperative planting. Not grass!
One day, I hope to be writing about it here.
