This is a simple children’s talk for explaining the magic of God’s love and how it grows as we give it away.
Start the session by explaining that we are going to discover a bit of magic. But in order to do so we need to do some maths.
Ask. Who here likes maths?
Now do a simple sum. It needs to be a minus sum. e.g. 5-3=2 etc.
Ask. Do you want to see a bit of magic?
God’s love grows as you give it away. Hold up a piece of A4 paper with the words God’s love written on it.
Ask the children to count how many corners there are on the paper.
You need to have a pair of scissors and a box of sweets handy!
Pick up the pair of scissors and cut off one of the corners. Using the cut off corner pick up a sweet and give it away.
Now ask the children how many corners do we have? 5!
So, I have cut away a corner but now I have more corners!
This next bit is difficult. You need a volunteer to give away a corner. The danger is the volunteer might eat the sweet but you need them to give it away. The idea is to demonstrate that giving away God’s love multiplies God’s love encouraging the children to give away God’s love.
You can keep going cutting away corners and counting away or after 2 or 3 cuts you can now ask the children if any want to give away God’s love. If you are doing this as part of a family service, the children could be encouraged to take sweets to other people or to their friends. Just ensure every child gets a sweet and if possible every person receives something (you might need some flowers for folks who don’t like sweets)!
